WOTWS great track, Herbert was in some illustrious company there, including Ron Ross on sax, who was one of Bowie's earliest mentors. So many of them dying now - I'm not remotely religious, but I am eternally grateful for whoever decreed that I could come up through those years. It'll never be like that again.

Chim

He was indeed on a day rate (25 quid), but he recalls it with great satisfaction.

Because he, Lou Reed and David Bowie though it would sound great if they overdubbed bass guitar and double bass, he got paid double-bubble!

RIP mate, some great basslines there.

If you ever want to know if you've got a lovely hi-fi or not play just play Walk On The Wild Side and try to hear his buzzing note all through the song. When you hear it you feel that you're listening to it for the first time.

I'm not looking it up but didn't he get paid a day rate for that (about $50)? A bullseye for one of the most memorable basslines in history?

Played bass on Space Oddity, Walk on the Wild Side, and Rock On (David Essex). Also composed Grandad.

What a legacy.

RIP
